The Loyal Opposition

I am a secularist, an atheist, a skeptic, and… a Jew. Surprise you? I guess not. I suppose I do fit the stereotype, but there’s always a kernel of truth in a generalization somewhere.
For example, take this joke, if you will:
Q: What do you call a Jew that doesn’t believe in God?

A: A Jew.

I made it up myself (a small pat on the back), and if you personally know a Jew, it demonstrates that a ‘Jew’ isn’t necessarily Jewish.

There are many intellectual atheists who proudly call themselves Jews and observe Jewish rites, perhaps out of loyalty to an ancient tradition or to murdered relatives, but also because of a confused and confusing willingness to label as 'religion' the pantheistic reverence which many of us share with its most distinguished exponent, Albert Einstein. I find each of my labels to be in the minority wherever I go. I’d like for a minute to tie all four of these positions together, and give you a general overview.


Now, when I say that I am a Jew, I mean so in the most important sense of the word: Culture. I’m not referring to the Orthodox Jews that schlep around Baltimore City or New York; I’m talking about the liberal part of Judaism devoted to debate and intellectual pursuits, acquiring knowledge and understanding of the world around us. It's clear that the more religious a Jewish person is, the more they are not concerned with the world around us; it is the secular Jews that care most about social justice, the enviornment, and politics. I seriously harp on this often, but in all other cultures today, I just cannot find the love of learning, wisdom, and liberalism that is intrinsic to Jewish culture. I do not see the doubt, skepticism, and irreverence that are inherent to Judaism anywhere else.

Of course, I'm using a bit of hyperbole as of now. I do see the Roman Catholic Church struggling in an internal war ofor souls. It's gradually becoming more progressive, and since today no other religious group is both as powerful and intellectually driven, these next fifty years should be very interesting.

But back on topic: I’ll give you a prime example of the irreverence of Jewish culture: During the whole fiasco with the Danish cartoons depicting Mohammed, several very important Iranian men decided to create anti-Semitic cartoons out of protest. I’m not sure what they were protesting (besides the delusion that the Jews do control everything), but they printed some offensive cartoons about the Holocaust. 

Now, did the Israelis rampage through the streets, burning cars and shooting men, women and children? 

No. They did not. 

Did the Jews on the East and West coasts of the U.S. march on their respective state capitals out of fury, rage and spite? 

Of course not!

In fact, did a single person suffer third-degree burns, did a single person die for these illustrations, and did a single person have their house burned to the ground in protest? 

No, no, and no.

What did happen explains Judaism far better than I could: A Jewish newspaper began printing anti-Semitic cartoons by Jews [Boomka]! They were offensive, crude, wrong, and you know what? I laughed when I read them. Only the Jewish culture has this irreverence, wit and biting sarcasm. In today's world, I see it nowhere else. Only a Jew has the self-deprecating humor to laugh at such horrible jokes.

"We will show the world we can do the best, sharpest, most offensive Jew-hating cartoons ever published," said Israeli cartoonist Amitai Sandy. He noted a truth well-known to students of humor: When it comes to making fun of the tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people, nobody does it better than the Jews. "No Iranian can compete with us on that," he declared [3].

The Jewish culture has always been a small minority whenever and wherever one looks. We’ve been tossed out of countries for not believing, shoved into ghettos for wearing different clothes, shot, gassed, and killed over centuries. We understand this, and what comes out is both a resistance to popular opinion and a horrific sense of irony.

"The dichotomy between religion and culture doesn't really exist," [Gary] Tobin says. "Every religious attribute is filled with culture; every cultural act filled with religiosity. Synagogues themselves are great centers of Jewish culture. After all, what is life really about? Food, relationships, enrichment… So is Jewish life. So many of our traditions inherently contain aspects of culture. Look at the Passover seder–it's essentially great theater. Jewish education and religiosity bereft of culture is not as interesting." (The Emergence of a Jewish Cultural Identity

Jews do not try to turn anyone else into Jews. Conversion just doesn’t interest us. We have no Hell, so there is no pain and suffering for those that do not believe. The most important piece of the Jewish culture is best described to an outsider as this: the Jews are in a perpetual argument with God. Now that is something that sets Jews apart. As Woody Allen says,

To you I'm an atheist; to God, I'm the Loyal Opposition.

I’ll finish this off with a long citation that is far superior to anything I could ever say.

Jews generally have an all but hardwired propensity for avoiding theological and religious terminology when describing themselves. Hebrew, for example, has no exact equivalent for the word “religion.” . . . the majority of American Jews should be understood as deists: They define themselves as members of a religious group yet they possess a distinctly secular outlook.

. . . Jews were supposed to assimilate into American society, yet their exceptionalism persists. They are not like the rest of America. By virtually any measure America is a Protestant society. It is a land of spiritual searchers, associational religion, and belief in personal salvation. Yet this hardly describes the majority of Jews. Indeed, it better describes Orthodox Jews, who are of course a small minority of Jews . . . . In short, most Jewish hearts and minds are not part of white-bread, Main Street America. Rather, the well-educated Jewish masses appear to emulate the secular elite of Europe. Whom do American Jews most resemble from a sociological and demographic perspective? The Dutch or Scandinavians: an affluent population with low fertility, well-educated and emancipated women, low levels of religiosity, strong communitarian values, tolerant social attitudes, liberal outlook, and center-left voting records. . . .

Issues surrounding the place of religion (and race) in society often play out in America the same way that issues of social class do in other democratic states—that is, in political party alignment. In Europe, for example, the left-wing and socialist parties exist to advance the interests of the trades unions and the socially and economically disadvantaged, while the Conservative parties and the right have a well-defined platform representing the opposing interests of capitalism and the wealthier elements in society. In the United States, the more religious tend to support the Republican, rather than the Democratic party. . . . American Jews are the mirror image of the Pentecostals and Mormons who occupy the opposite end of the political spectrum—even after controls for social class, education, and geography are taken into account. Time after time, Jews stand out as being the most politically aligned with the Democrats . . . The evidence thus seems to bear out Milton Himmelfarb’s famous aphorism that Jews live like Episcopalians but vote like Puerto Ricans.

. . . . Truly assimilated American Jews—those whose religious and cultural affinities have led them to leave the fold completely and adopt other faiths—assume a political profile mirroring that of Christian America ( As Secular As They Come, by Barry Kosmin).

    I disagree. How unusual for me to disagree with someone. Ha ha

    Now, I can’t demonstrate to what degree the same self-deprecating humour is evident in other cultures, but it is alive and well in australian culture.

    Australians love to take the p*** out of themselves and other australians. It is a common cultural trait. (Mind you, we take the mickey out of everyone else as well. We kinda have a no exceptions rule. Ha ha)

    What is interesting is to speculate, and I admit this is speculation on my part, as to why this sort of dynamic originates and perpetuates.

    The founding of australia was as a convict nation where the supposed scum and dregs of the earth were sent to a “worldly hell” for the rest of their natural lives.

    So, australia was basically founded as a huge convict prison surrounded by water from which there was no escape for “mother england’s poor, rejected and unwanted.”

    A huge “concentration camp”, if you will, for those who were considered miscreants, evil doers, and criminally insane.

    It was a place where the “evil” of mother england could be separated permanently from the righteous, law abiding, upstanding moral citizens of the day.

    Australians who can trace their ancestry back to a convict, wear this knowledge with considerable pride.

    Why is this? I think part of it has to do with thumbing their noses at those who would have wished for their destruction.

    Saying, I am related to a convict is, in essence, like saying to someone who has fired a gun at you and missed, “Ner ner nerner - you missed me.” :)

    Ethnicity and racial prejudice are irrational. One mathematical calculation I came across years ago is fascinating in that regard. Each of us has 2 ancestors 1 generation ago (our parents), 4 ancestors 2 generations ago (our grandparents). The formula is 2 to the Nth power with N being the number of generations. That means that from the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, (about 100 generations), each of us would be expected to have 2 to the 100th power, or over 1 followed by 30 zeros! Obviously, that many people have never lived, so what it means is that the likelihood that each of us could trace our ancestry to someone alive (who reproduced) at that time is very high. So, everyone whose ancestors were not completely isolated geographically throughout history can claim Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as ancestors. So, we are all Jewish to some degree. We are all also African, Chinese, Siberian, Native American, European, or Indian to some degree. So there is no basis for racism, anti-Semitism, or any other belief that one person’s ethnicity is better or more pure than any others. Maybe if people started to realize that it is their irrational beliefs that are the culprit rather than those people who need to be blamed or hurt because of their self-identified ethnicity, the world could finally find some peace and unity. I hope this wasn’t too bad a digression, but those who call themselves Jewish are more often a magnet for those who hate than any other group, and the whole thing is completely irrational.

    I agree that collective blame according to ethnicity is irrational.

    Jews have been collectively blamed for all sorts of things for centuries. So have atheists for that matter.

    I hope my previous rant did not in anyway suggest that I condone this sort of behaviour.
